Cr Vaughan Williams Announces Re-Election Bid in Crucial 2024 Council Elections
City of Greater Bendigo, VIC — With the upcoming 2024 Council elections, voters will once again be called upon to elect new representatives for the City of Greater Bendigo. This election is set to be particularly pivotal, as a significant number of current Councillors have chosen not to recontest their seats, leading to a potential gap in experience and knowledge of ongoing projects.
Vaughan Williams, one the current representative for the Lockwood Ward, has officially announced his candidacy for re-election. This election will also see a significant change in the structure of the Bendigo Council, with the traditional three-ward system being reverted to a nine-ward configuration, as determined by a statewide decision from the Victorian Electoral Commission.
"As a Councillor for the City of Greater Bendigo, my commitment has always been to bring transparency and accountability to the Council," said Williams. "It’s time for a return to common-sense policy and governance. I remain dedicated to listening to the community and ensuring that the changes being made are clearly communicated, including the stages of ongoing and future projects."
Williams emphasized his stance on responsible rate increases and cost reductions, particularly in light of the current economic climate. "With rampant inflation affecting our community, I believe it is crucial to focus on strategies that minimise financial pressure on ratepayers. My priorities include bolstering local industry and the economy, including the agricultural industries to create more job opportunities, particularly in technology-centric industries, and addressing the pressing issues of housing, homelessness, drug abuse and mental health."
Addressing the growing concern over flooding in the region,
Williams called for increased advocacy to secure state and federal funding for
long-term solutions. He also highlighted the need for improved planning in new
housing estates to mitigate flood risks. "Housing is also a critical
issue, not only in terms of affordable and social housing but also in providing
emergency and transitional housing for the homeless. Youth crime is another
area that demands immediate attention."
With the new ward structure in mind Vaughan has not as yet decided on which
ward he will run in, as he wants to be a strong voice for the ward he will
represent and Bendigo as a whole.
Williams' track record includes his opposition to rate hikes during the COVID-19 pandemic, a stance he continues to uphold during the current cost-of-living crisis. He advocates for responsible rate increases and proposes the removal of non-essential council services that do not benefit the entire Bendigo community, aiming for further cost savings.
"New Councillors must be the true voice of the people they represent, not merely echo the Council's agenda," Williams stated.
